Nicotine gum to quit smoking -
Can those gums help me?
Smoking is a habit that needs a lot of will power to get rid off. Just like all other addictive substances, nicotine can also lead to intense craving in smokers and the cessation of the habit of smoking is more often than not accompanied by withdrawal symptoms that discourage the smoker from giving up the habit on the whole. The action of chewing is also good because it stimulates the production of saliva and also helps control hunger pangs and false alarms of hunger that are triggered by the body.
The nicotine gum is the most effective method that falls under the category of treatments popularly known as ‘nicotine replacement therapy.’ Available in the form of chewing gums with varied flavors like the more traditional mint to the more fruity flavors like orange, etc. nicotine gum has an established market almost all over the world today. Nicotine gums have also helped smokers quit this debilitating habit of smoking for over two decades now.
This is not the best solution if you want to quit smoking because Nicotine Replacement Therapy or in short known as NRT still gives you your daily dosage of nicotine and you may develop a taste for the nicotine gum later on just like you did for the more harmful cigarettes earlier. The new users consume almost thirty pieces of nicotine gum a day and this sets the limit for the nicotine gum too. On an average, a dozen or a little less than a dozen pieces are required in the initial stages and nearly for the entire month in the initial stages.
Available in packages with a dosage of either 2 milligrams or 4-milligrams, the larger dose is generally for the heavy smokers and the smaller doses of the nicotine gum is for light and occasional smokers and people who are close to getting rid of the habit of smoking altogether. A piece is first chewed well when it is placed in the mouth till the smoker is satisfied with the amount of nicotine released. The product works on the principle of absorption into the bloodstream of the human body through the pathway of the tissues in the mouth that is directly involved in the process of chewing. Once chewed well, the nicotine gum is then parked in the space or the junction between the gums and the cheek. The entire time frame in which the gum is chewed in this manner keeps the smoker satisfied for at least half an hour.
It was only after the 1990’s that nicotine gums began to be sold like over-the-counter medication. It now has FDA approval and there is no set restriction on its sale. However, its usage should be monitored correctly as very large doses of nicotine gum could lead to the development of problems with the gums and cause throat irritation too. The muscles of the throat may also get rigid and constricted and hiccups are a very common symptom and these act as indicators of over usage.
